San Angel Folk Art celebrates its 20th Fiesta with a focus on the
amazing talent and spirit of local artists,
Jon Karl Dawson, Carolina
Flores, Alex de Leon, and
Karl Frey. San Angel’s [Artist] Progress Alliance is a private
sector model for close partnership between a for-profit gallery and
local artists that may well be one solution for our local cultural
sector. In its 20 years of operation, under the guidance of owner Hank
Lee and Director Leigh Anne
Lester,
San Angel has consistently prioritized artist sustainability by honoring
artist contracts, even purchasing outright most artists’ works. Now more
than ever, we feel more committed to making sure that local contemporary
artists continue to make incredible work and feel the support of art
patrons, both local and visiting.
Art has traditionally focused on the conditions facing humanity. At San
Angel, we have been inspired by the artists who tell us that they are
ready to press forward in their work, despite concerns of reduced
spending. Recently, John Karl Dawson visited the gallery and mentioned
that he could not wait until Fiesta ‘09, because he was ready to feel
good and have fun. This exhibit will feature new paintings of Muertos
enjoying great parties in the Great Beyond. Dawson has also created more
of hand-painted stem and bar ware with dancing skeletons and Mexican
wrestlers. New work from Artpace recipient Alex De Leon include Chicano
iconographic adorned bowls, juice jugs and shot glasses that reflect
life in San Anto. Karl Frey
has created exquisitely detailed paintings of San Antonio’s residents
enjoying the good times. And lastly, local favorite Carolina
Flores has created brilliantly hued clay Milagros that portray the
beauty and hope of life on the lush San Antonio River.
At San Angel, we believe that a city supporting local artists and artist
communities on all levels will cultivate pride, ownership and community
for the city as whole.
In
